You will be back for another session!
2. WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I ARRIVE?
Great question! Here we have outlined the process for you:
Look out for two A-Frame at the front of our clinic Also, you will notice a teardrop banner saying, “Float Naked”, “Massage” or “Myotherapy”.
We now have two floatation tanks – our Apollo ELV and Apollo SC floatation tank, which are made locally in Australia.
4. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME TO MY FLOATATION THERAPY SESSION?
Everything you need is supplied for you in the float room: natural shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a towel, and earplugs, if needed. Each floatation room is equipped with a self-contained shower facility where you can wash and dry yourself in your privacy. In the colder months, we recommend that you bring a beanie or spare towel for your hair. While optional, you can bring swimwear. We do not supply hair dryers, as they can be noisy and disruptive to others around you trying to enjoy their calming float experience. For this reason, we ask you not to bring your own either.
5. HOW LONG SHOULD I STAY IN THE FLOATATION TANK?
If you have never used a floatation tank before, we recommend 90 minutes. Some people find 2- or 3-hour sessions valuable as longer sessions may help you sink into a deeper state of relaxation. How long you choose to float depends on your goals. We are happy to advise, but you’re always in control.
6. DO I NEED TO FLOAT MORE THAN ONCE IN THE FLOATATION TANK?
It’s up to you. However, to get the best results from floatation therapy, we strongly recommend that you float a minimum of 3–5 times to see the benefits for yourself. Most people get a sense of what floating is like after their first float. Those who see the potential the first time want to return again and again. It’s a little, well… addictive! But in a nice way.
7. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I EXPERIENCE FLOATATION?
Once again, this entirely depends on what you want to get out of your experience and how quickly you want to achieve results. As a guide, we recommend weekly floats to begin for the first 3–5 sessions, then fortnightly for a few more floats, and monthly after that for maintenance. Everyone is different, so it is all about finding your “floatation sweet spot”!
8. IS THERE A BEST TIME TO USE THE FLOATATION TANK?
No. Everyone is different. Some people prefer mornings and others, evenings. The best way to find out is to experiment by using the tank at different times of the day. Go on, have some fun!
9. DO I NEED TO WEAR ANYTHING IN THE FLOATATION TANK?
No. (Seriously!) Since you will be floating in a private setting, you can float completely naked. Having nothing pressing against your body should help you achieve deeper relaxation. Of course, you can wear your bathers if you like.
10. HOW OFTEN IS THE WATER CHANGED IN A FLOATATION TANK?
Like a pool or spa, the floatation tank water is changed at regular intervals or on an as-needed basis. Extra fresh water and Epsom salts are added regularly as the water levels drop over time with people getting in and out of the tank. Also, we actively manage the hygiene and cleanliness of floatation tanks using the following procedures:
A high standard of hygiene is very important to us, and we follow strict procedures to ensure that your floatation tank is always clean before each session. If you ever have any concerns about the hygiene or cleanliness of our facilities, please speak with us directly.
11. DO I NEED TO PREPARE MYSELF FOR A FLOATATION THERAPY SESSION?
No, simply come with an open mind! If your knowledge of floatation comes from watching YouTube videos and reading other people’s opinions or experiences… please put those aside and enjoy your open and unique experience.
12. WHAT DO I NEED TO BE AWARE OF DURING MY SESSION?
Great question! Please review the following helpful tips:
13. WHAT WILL THE EXPERIENCE OF FLOATATION BE LIKE FOR ME?
Honestly, we don’t know as everyone is different! Not only will it be different for you than the next person, but it will also be different for you each time. The most common reports are profound peace and relaxation, deep concentration and creativity. Many people feel a sense of wellbeing and calm. But your experience deepens and evolves as you gain more experience!
14. IT THERE A CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF USING THE TANK REGULARLY?
Yes. There seems to be a cumulative effect with the consistent use of the tank. While not documented by research, the tank users know it is true. Relaxation is a learned art that needs practise like everything else in life. It’s a skill like anything else that takes time, commitment and consistency. But the effort is well worth it!
15. IS THERE A RIGHT WAY FOR ME TO FLOAT?
You should be comfortable in the float tank and explore the best position for you. Get curious. Remember, this is your experience. Some people float with their hands by their side, some with their hands folded across their chest or abdomen or behind their head. For more floatation tips go to https://www.floatationtankmelbourne.com.au/positioning-yourself-while-floating.html
16. CAN I EAT BEFORE MY SESSION?
Yes, you can eat in moderation, whatever makes you comfortable. If you eat a big meal, you may need to put up with feeling a bit bloated but if you come in with a totally empty stomach. you may be distracted by the rumbling sound of your stomach! Generally, it’s recommended a light meal 60 to 90 minutes before your float.
17. IS THERE ENOUGH AIR IN THE FLOATATION TANK?
Yes. The tank is not airtight, so there is plentiful air supply. You do have the option of opening up the float tank hatch if you need more air.
18. CAN PEOPLE DROWN IN A FLOATATION TANK?
No. Not unless you lay face down in the water and are capable of tolerating the sting of the salt on the eyes, nose and mouth! Since the tank water is five times more buoyant than seawater, you will notice when you are floating that it requires quite a bit of effort to roll over.
19. WHAT IF I FALL ASLEEP WHILE I AM FLOATING? IS IT DANGEROUS?
It is perfectly safe for you to fall asleep in the tank. Some people fall asleep easily in the float tank, and some people use the tank for sleeping if they are feeling jetlagged or suffering from a lack of sleep. The reason people think it may be dangerous is probably the fear of rolling over. However, it is very difficult to roll over in the tank because of the density of the solution. If any of the salt solutions gets into your eyes, mouth or nose, you will wake up immediately. We have various cues we can use to gently wake you once the session comes to an end, so you can have peace of mind if you sleep during your float. Did you know that one hour of floating is equivalent to 4 hours of sleep? So, whether you sleep or not, you will finish your session feeling as though you had a refreshing nap!
20. WILL I BE ABLE TO RESUME MY DAILY ACTIVITIES AFTER MY SESSION?
Yes. We recommend you arrange an appointment time, so you do not have to rush. Many people enjoy savouring the quiet before getting back into the rat race and the pace of modern life. We recommend you take the time to stay in the deep state of relaxation that you should experience during your float.
21. WILL I FLOAT? I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FLOAT IN WATER BEFORE?
Yes. It is impossible not to float in the tank as 350kg of salt is dissolved in the water. This dense solution will push your body to the surface like a cork! Your face is out of the solution, and your ears are underwater. We provide disposable earplugs for each session, and you can purchase Mack’s Silicone reusable earplugs. We also provide you with neck support acting like a pillow that you can lay on to support your neck and keep your ears out of the water.
22. WHAT IF I GET SALT IN MY EYES WHILE FLOATING? HOW CAN I AVOID THIS?
We provide you with a water bottle you can squirt over your face, and there will be a towel nearby to wipe your eyes. The secret is to push your hair back when you change from lying down to sitting up. Also, keep your salty hands away from your face and eyes. There may be the occasional drip of condensation from the roof of the tank, and should it happen to land on your face/in your eyes use a sponge provided to wipe the condensation above the tank. A water bottle can be used to splash your face will come handy.
23. IS THE FLOATATION TANK NOT APPROPRIATE FOR SOME PEOPLE?
Yes. Floatation is not recommended for people with epilepsy whose condition is not under medical control. Also, people under the influence of alcohol and drugs, those with infectious diseases or open skin wounds, or those with suicidal tendencies are advised not to use the floatation tanks. If you have any concerns, please speak with us before using the floatation tank.
24. I AM PREGNANT, CAN I USE THE TANK?
You can use the flotation tank from the second trimester of pregnancy. It is recommended to avoid float tank therapy during the first trimester of gestation. We suggest that you inform your doctor or midwife and get their consent before using the tank. As your body gets heavier, floating is a great relief from lower back stress, feet discomfort and the pull of gravity on your body. Pregnant women describe their experience with a floating tank as profoundly relaxing and enjoyable. By merely floating every few weeks, you can strengthen your immune system, increase your ability to withstand and respond to stress, reduce harmful biochemicals in your system and become a stronger, happier pregnant woman. Some women claim to feel every move of the baby during floating – very special!
25. WHAT EFFECT DO EPSOM SALTS HAVE ON MY SKIN AND HAIR?
The Epsom salts solution has a positive effect on the skin and hair. It is especially good for people who have skin rashes or psoriasis. It can have a soothing effect, as Epsom salts reduce inflammation. It can also have a detoxifying and healing effect on the skin, as it has antiseptic properties. You may find that the Epsom salts may sting if you have a scratch or cut but will also aid in the healing process.
26. MAY I WEAR A BATHING CAP?
Yes, however, it will probably not keep your hair dry. Also, a bathing cap can feel restrictive, so we do not recommend it unless you need to use one.
27. MAY I HAVE A FLOATATION SESSION STRAIGHT AFTER COLOURING OR TREATING MY HAIR?
If your hair is treated and you are unsure about the effects of the Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate), please discuss this with your hairdresser. For colour, you must wait until the colour is no longer running out in the shower when you wash it at home. If the colour bleeds into the tank, it will stain and be very expensive to remove, and you may be expected to bear the costs. Please be aware that hair colours such as purple, blue, red or pink may also stain the shower, which may also incur a fee. When you have NO colour washing/bleeding out of your hair when you take a shower, it is okay for you to float.
28. I AM MENSTRUATING. MAY I STILL USE THE FLOATATION TANK?
Yes. However, you must use a tampon.
29. I AM TALL. WILL I FIT INSIDE THE FLOATATION TANK?
The length of the tank is 2.28m, and the width is 1.38m. If you are within these dimensions, you will fit in the tank!
30. I JUST GOT A TATTOO. IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO FLOAT?
We recommend that you wait until your tattoo is healed before you float (around two weeks) as open wounds will sting and possibly affect your ability to relax.
31. I AM CLAUSTROPHOBIC. HOW CAN I OVERCOME THIS IN THE FLOATATION TANK?
Have no fear! Our floatation tanks are like a big bathtub that can be fully enclosed or not. With a sliding hatch that does not lock, the top of the tank can easily be opened fully, partially or remain completely closed. You can easily open or close the tank. You are in full control of this at all times. If you feel uncomfortable closing the hatch, you can simply keep it fully or partially open! After all, the point of the session is for you to relax. Also, you can turn the lights on or off as needed with a flick of the switch! The water in the floatation tank is filled with Epsom salts, which is magnesium sulphate, a natural relaxant for the muscles and the nervous system, helping you to relax quickly and effortlessly. Knowing that you are in full control of the session means that you can make the session comfortable and enjoyable and terminate it at any time if you are not enjoying it. For most, it is essential to realise that the real fear is the mind’s perception of the experience, rather than the experience itself.
32. I HAVE A SENSITIVITY TO CHLORINE; WILL THIS IMPACT MY EXPERIENCE?
A small amount of chlorine in the tank keeps it to industry standards of tank water cleanliness and hygiene. We use much less than in most swimming pools. If you are allergic to chlorine, we suggest testing the water, to begin with. However, slight sensitivities usually are not a problem as there is little chlorine in the tank. If you find the smell overwhelming, open the tank hatch and let some fresh air in the tank. This usually works for most people!
33. I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE FLOATING NAKED. MAY I WEAR A BATHING SUIT?
Yes, most certainly. The idea of floating naked is for you to avoid any contact with fabric, as this may be distracting to some. However, your experience may differ. In the end, this is your experience, so if wearing a bathing suit makes you more comfortable, then that is okay with us!
34. I DON'T LIKE BEING IN TOTAL DARKNESS. MAY I LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON?
Yes, you will find a light switch inside your floatation tank. You can flick it on or off whenever you like – you’re in control!
35. IS THERE ANY WAY OF NOT WETTING MY HAIR? MAY I WEAR A SWIMMING CAP?
This is probably not possible as your head will be partly submerged, and water will cover your ears. Most caps would probably not stop your hair from getting wet.
36. MY CHILD IS UNDER 12 - CAN HE/SHE FLOAT?
We do not advise children under the age of 12 to float. However, a parent must accompany children under the age of 15.
37. I CANNOT FLOAT / I CANNOT SWIM / I CANNOT FLOAT IN WATER!
Even people who cannot swim can still float in our tanks. That’s because our tanks contain 350kg of Epsom salts making them five times more buoyant than seawater, so you can effortlessly float inside our tanks. The water is also only about 30cm deep, so you can easily sit up in the tank, and the water will reach around hip-height while sitting. You will find that your body is naturally half under the water and half above the water.
We hope all your questions are answered above so that you can go ahead and enjoy your float experience. But if you have other questions – feel free to ask and contact us here.

See you on the other side.
