One of the most talked about examples in recent years is NBA superstar Stephen Curry, who has openly shared how float therapy plays a role in his recovery and mental preparation.

Float therapy, also known as sensory deprivation or floatation therapy, might sound unusual at first. However, when one of the world’s greatest basketball players repeatedly credits it as part of his routine, it naturally raises curiosity. More importantly, it invites a deeper conversation about why floating works, who it is for, and what everyday people can learn from it.

This blog post explores Steph Curry’s float experiences, what happens inside the body and brain during a float, and why this practice is becoming increasingly popular not only among elite athletes but also among everyday Australians seeking relief from stress, pain, and mental overload.

Who is Steph Curry and why his recovery choices matter

Steph Curry is widely regarded as one of the greatest shooters in basketball history. His success is not just the result of talent, but of meticulous preparation, recovery, and mental conditioning. Over long NBA seasons, athletes endure repetitive strain, travel fatigue, pressure, and intense sensory input.

What makes Curry’s openness about float therapy so powerful is that it highlights a shift in elite sport. Recovery is no longer just ice baths and massage. It is about calming the nervous system, improving sleep, and supporting the brain as much as the muscles.

Steph Curry talking about float therapy

Steph Curry has spoken publicly about his float experiences and how they support his physical and mental reset. Below are three videos where you can hear him describe floating in his own words.

Video 1:

Video 2:

Video 3:

These clips give valuable insight into how floating helps him decompress, reduce sensory overload, and feel more balanced in his body.

What is float therapy, and how does it work

Float therapy involves lying effortlessly in warm water saturated with magnesium-rich Epsom salts. The water is heated to skin temperature, allowing the body to float without effort while minimising external stimuli such as light, sound, and gravity.

This environment gives the nervous system a rare opportunity to downshift.

Research published by the National Institutes of Health shows that float therapy can reduce stress, lower cortisol levels, improve mood, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the state where the body prioritises healing, recovery, and repair.

Why float therapy supports elite performance

Deep Physical Recovery
When gravity is removed, pressure on joints, muscles, and the spine reduces significantly. For athletes like Steph Curry, whose body absorbs constant impact, this relief allows muscles to relax more fully than on land.

Float therapy also supports circulation and muscle recovery by encouraging full-body relaxation, which can assist with post-training soreness and fatigue.

Nervous System Reset
One of the most powerful benefits of floating is its effect on the nervous system. During a float, brain waves often shift into slower alpha and theta states. These states are associated with creativity, learning, emotional regulation, and deep rest.

For elite performers, this mental reset can be just as valuable as physical recovery.

Improved Focus and Mental Clarity
Steph Curry has spoken about using floats to clear his mind. In a world of constant stimulation, floating creates a rare space where the brain is not processing noise, screens, or external demands.

This mental quiet can improve concentration, emotional resilience, and decision-making both on and off the court.

Why magnesium matters in float therapy

The Epsom salts used in float tanks are rich in magnesium, a mineral essential for muscle function, nerve signalling, and stress regulation.

According to Healthdirect Australia, magnesium plays a role in muscle relaxation, sleep quality, and nervous system balance. While absorption through the skin is still being researched, many people report feeling calmer and more relaxed after floating, particularly those experiencing muscle tension or stress related tightness.

What everyday people can learn from Steph Curry’s float routine

You do not need to be an elite athlete to benefit from float therapy. The same principles that support high level performance also support everyday health.

Float therapy can be beneficial for people who experience

Chronic stress or mental overload

Poor sleep or difficulty switching off

Muscle tension, aches, or pain

Anxiety or burnout

Sensory overwhelm or mental fatigue

For many clients, floating becomes a powerful complement to hands on therapies, exercise, or mindfulness practices.

Float therapy and mental health support

Research from the Laureate Institute for Brain Research has shown that float therapy can significantly reduce anxiety and improve mood in people experiencing high stress. By removing external sensory input, the brain is given space to settle and recalibrate.

This is particularly relevant in today’s fast paced world, where constant stimulation keeps the nervous system in a heightened state.

Is float therapy safe and who is it for

Float therapy is generally safe for most people. It is non invasive, drug free, and gentle on the body. Sessions are supervised, and you are always in control of your experience.

It may not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions, open wounds, or severe claustrophobia. If in doubt, it is always best to speak with a qualified health professional before booking a session.

Why float therapy is becoming mainstream

When high-profile athletes like Steph Curry openly share their experiences, float therapy becomes easier to understand and trust. What was once considered niche is now supported by growing research and real-world results.

Float therapy is no longer just about relaxation. It is about recovery, nervous system health, and long-term wellbeing.

Floating is not about escaping, it is about resetting

Steph Curry’s float experiences highlight something important. True recovery is not about pushing harder. It is about knowing when to pause, reset, and allow the body and mind to restore.

Float therapy offers a rare opportunity to experience deep rest in a world that rarely slows down. Whether you are an athlete, a busy professional, or someone simply seeking calm, the principles behind floating apply to us all.

Sometimes the most powerful performance tool is not doing more, but allowing yourself to truly switch off.

You can learn more about float therapy and explore whether it is right for you by booking online here.

G'day Float Art Car Enthusiasts!

https://www.floatationtankmelbourne.com.au/blog/gday-float-art-car-enthusiasts

https://www.floatationtankmelbourne.com.au/blog/gday-float-art-car-enthusiasts#comments

Float Art Car

I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our clients who swung by the clinic to witness the mesmerising creation that was the Float Art Car. Massive thanks to everyone who tagged #FloatArtCar on social media and a special shoutout to those who scored a 90-minute float for free – you’re absolute champions!

Firstly, let me give a massive thumbs up to the genius behind this whole project – Dino, the artistic creator of the Float Art Car design. This local legend poured his heart and soul into crafting this beauty, dedicating a solid week to bring his vision to life. You're seriously missing out if you haven't checked out his other local artworks. Take a squiz at them here!

During the tumultuous COVID lockdowns, Dino conceived the Float Art Car to not only add a splash of vibrancy to our community but also to get people involved in the fantastic world of floating. I’m sure you’ll agree, he totally nailed it!

Now, I've gotta be honest. While the project was somewhat successful, we were hoping to see a bit more action at the clinic. It would've been great to have more of you dive into the floating experience (pun intended!) with the awesome incentive we had going – a free 90-minute float for those who tagged #FloatArtCar. But hey, we appreciate each and every one of you who did take advantage, THANK YOU!

For those who missed out on seeing the Float Art Car live and in full Technicolor, fear not, we've got a slide shows that capture the transformation from a blank yellow taxi cab canvas to a riot of bright, vibrant colors. It was truly a visual feast for the eyes!

And for the sentimental souls out there, we've also got a slideshow showcasing the Float Art Car's bittersweet farewell as it made its way to the car wreckers. It's a journey worth reminiscing.

If you haven't had your fill of all things Float Art Car, make sure to check out our other blog posts related to this mind-blowing concept. In fact, in most countries, marking or painting property without permission is considered by civic authorities and property owners as defacement and vandalism. Vandalism is a punishable crime in some countries as the use of graffiti by street gangs to mark territory is not permitted. Graffiti is seen as a growing urban "problem" for many cities in industrialized countries where it is thought to be an eyesore or a blight on the community.

However, attitudes towards graffiti began to change throughout the 20th century, and today it is now often referred to as “Urban Street Art”. Graffiti’s roots and evolution from art crime has made it an important part of our history, encouraging people to embrace the artwork depicted in their city. People who create graffiti consider themselves artists who express themselves on the public canvas producing some of the most imaginative, beautiful and poignant street art, with the blessing of property owners and communities.

Some graffiti is considered to be similar to community murals and imparts a sense of pride within the community. Street art is used to decorate empty public spaces to make people feel more involved in the social life of the community.

In Australia, many cities now have designated areas or walls exclusively for graffitists in an effort to reduce vandalism. For example, students at the Camperdown Campus of the University of Sydney are able to tag, advertise, poster, and create "art" at the "Graffiti Tunnel" located there; this discourages petty vandalism but encourages artists to take their time to produce great art, without worrying about being caught or arrested for vandalism or trespassing.

Some cities, including Amsterdam and Berlin, embrace graffiti as a cultural asset and tourists are given tours of the highlights. London is said to be one of the world’s largest locations for collectable street art; local artists have decorated areas with captivating artwork.

Graffiti can have a strong social as well as political connotation in many parts of the world and can be a reflection of the country’s culture as it attracts more people to view the creative, colourful displays which were inspired by the artists.

For many people who are members of both the art and design communities’ graffiti has provided them with a steppingstone to the art world. Many artists have made careers creating graffiti for skateboard, apparel, and shoe design for companies such as DC Shoes, Adidas, Rebel8 and Osiris.

Famous Graffiti Art

Banksy is considered the most famous graffiti artist to this day; his iconic artwork has been regularly featured in London and his works which include political and social commentary, have appeared on streets, walls, and bridges throughout the world.

An Australian record has been set for the sale of a Banksy print with the anonymous artist’s Love Is In the Air in 2003. Whether you are a student, artist or a working professional, we are predisposed to enjoying the experience of a boost in our ability to think, learn, and solve problems. Floating can do just that: studies show the time you spend in a float tank enhances your cognitive powers. Floating provides you with an extreme form of rest which is achieved because all external sources of distraction are removed; this appears to increase the positive effects of letting your default mode take over.

You can use floatation to explore your creative being and deeper self by using your time in the float tank to tune out the outside world. Since your body isn’t fighting gravity and your brain isn’t busy trying to process hundreds of sensations all at once, your mind is left free to explore and visualise rather amazing things and ideas.

Floating can be a unique way for you to break through creative blockages to find new inspiration to enhance your creativity. When your brain recognises it is being starved of stimulation it then begins to create new thoughts and ideas; some people begin to see colours or hear music, some feel themselves spinning around even though they aren’t actually moving.

Floating is not only beneficial to our physical bodies, but it also helps expand and inspire our minds.
During your float session, your brain goes from highly conscious alpha and beta waves to solid theta waves—what you would normally have right before falling asleep and just after waking up. Normally we only experience these theta waves for a few minutes but this extended theta period helps us to visualise better, sometimes giving us vivid mental images. The theta state can last for several minutes in a float tank without the loss of consciousness and is a beneficial tool we can use for enhanced creativity and problem-solving.

One of the coolest advantages of floating is how much it boosts creativity and nurtures inspiration and clarity. Nobody could have foreseen what would emerge from this: the world’s most consistent combination of automobiles and art designed by well-known artists using their own ideas.

A number of different artists transformed the BMWs into works of art using a wide range of graphic and artistic techniques on production vehicles: from pure racers to rare sports cars. If you have a gift voucher, float package program, or other promotional offer, all will be extended generously for you to use them. Please contact me to determine what restrictions (if any) apply.

I want to assure you that my priority remains safety and I will continue the enforcement of strict COVID-19 specific measures including:

Social distancing (1.5 m) will still be adhered to at all times.

You will only be greeted by me and I will always be wearing a facemask for your full protection.

I ask that if you have your own facemask, please put it on before coming into the clinic. If you don’t have one, I will provide you with one upon your arrival, which you will need to put on before and after your float.

Hand sanitiser will be available in the clinic. Upon your entry, I will ask you to use hand sanitiser or wash your hands immediately. This reduces the risk of anyone unknowingly transmitting virus particles to any surfaces like door handles, desk surfaces, and any surfaces in the float rooms etc.

Any close social contact; shaking hands, hugs, or other personal contact of any kind is strictly prohibited.

I am continually disinfecting and wiping down all surfaces after each client interaction including the EFTPOS and HICAPS machine, keyboards, mouse telephones, float tanks, and shower facilities.

It is still your responsibility if you are feeling unwell, experiencing respiratory and/or flu-like symptoms (including fever and cough), please call me on 9440 9453 or go online and reschedule your appointment, and please seek immediate medical attention.

With these measures and precautions in place, you can feel confident, despite the fact there may have been a few clients in the clinic before you on any given day, there is very little risk of virus contamination of any surfaces.

Floatation Therapy using our Float Tanks

Our New Float Hours During The Next Stage Of Lockdown Restrictions

For the next month, I will only be offering double float sessions, which means any two people from the same family or social distancing group can come and float at the same time, floating on their own of course, in our two separate float rooms.

You will need to pre-pay and get on a waiting list so you can be scheduled based on your preferences and the tank availability on a first in, best dressed basis. The reason for this is that we want you to have more time in the float tank to create a profound experience and gain greater value from the experience.

We also wanted to make things simple without creating confusion with too many options. Bearing in mind floating is not a one-off experience. Floating in is a learned skill, which requires patience, trust, allowing your-self to surrender to the weightless environment, letting go and with each session going deeper and deeper into a meditative state.

We are here to serve you, look after you and create a memorable experience.

To create the optimal result, we recommend you float once a week, for 3 to 4 weeks, then you can extend it to every 2 weeks after a few months and gradually get to once a month. Floating is an individual experience and really depends on what you want to get out of it and what the context of your floating is; how much stress and pressure there is in your life.

If you have any unused 1-hour gift vouchers, your float session moving forwards will be 90 minutes at no extra cost.

Numerous clients have trailed the new 90 minute floats and they noticed:

1. They had more time to reduce, dissolve the mental chatter
2. They felt more relaxed and able to get into a deep relaxation and meditative state
3. The session duration was the perfect amount of time

To make your next float appointment, you can call us on 9440 9453. Please leave us a message and tell us what 3 time slots you would like in order of preference and we will call you back to confirm your session(s).

We look forward to seeing you again for your next float!

P.S.
We are promoting DOUBLE FLOATS? 2 people floating at the same time in the evenings after 7pm for $99 per person.

VIDEO: Groundbreaking New Research on Floating for PTSD, Anxiety and Panic Disorders

https://www.floatationtankmelbourne.com.au/blog/video-groundbreaking-new-research-on-floating-for-ptsd-anxiety-and-panic-disorders

https://www.floatationtankmelbourne.com.au/blog/video-groundbreaking-new-research-on-floating-for-ptsd-anxiety-and-panic-disorders#comments

Anxiety

Mental Health

PTSD

Dr Justin Feinstein, a researcher at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has released results from his groundbreaking clinical trial of floating in sensory deprivation tanks to relieve symptoms of acute anxiety. In his study of 50 research participants with severe anxiety, he found that in every single participant, very strong reductions in stress and anxiety occurred after just one floatation session! Amazing results.

Floaters were connected to blood pressure, heart and brain monitors while floating, and within minutes of beginning to float they experienced blood pressure drops of 10-15 points. Floaters also reported feelings of peace and serenity which lasted for days after their float. Dr Feinstein explains that what is so amazing about the floatation treatment is that the participants don't have to do anything to experience the benefits of floating - the environment alone is enough to significantly change their mental, physical and emotional states.

Our very own Lena Yammine was lucky enough to hear Dr Feinstein's presentation in person at the 2015 Annual Float Conference. Dr Feinstein has done ongoing research in the floatation field and plans to commence an extended clinical trial examining the effects of regular, ongoing floatation sessions for people suffering from anxiety and panic disorders as well as PTSD.

Want to try floating your anxiety away? Book now and find out what floatation can do for you!
