I was so excited when I was invited to be interviewed to explain sensory deprivation tanks with Nick and Sam from Taking Lifestyle Radio. Even though I only had about an 1-hour notice to prepare, I always jump at the chance to talk about the benefits of floatation therapy.

Are you contemplating giving floatation tank therapy a go, but unsure what to expect? We just found this funny and interesting video of three people trying floatation tank therapy for the first time. It might give you a little bit more of a sense of what floatation therapy can offer you! All three bring different fears and expectations to their experience, and it’s interesting to hear their impressions after emerging from a two-hour float session. They all seem to find some really positive benefits! Watch below: Looking for a great book to snuggle up with? Want to learn more about the benefits of floatation tank therapy? Got some unanswered questions or concerns, or just looking to go a little deeper? We've got just the thing.
In this post I will review and link to some of the best floatation books out there! If you want to try floatation tank therapy but would like to research it first, or if you want to take your experience deeper using the knowledge and wisdom of those who have gone before, there is a book on this list that is perfect for you. Maybe more than one! Floatation tank therapy was invented in 1954 by John C. Lilly, a physician and neuro-psychiatrist with an interest in expanding consciousness and exploring the mind using means that ranged from the sensible to the utterly eccentric. In the 60-odd years since he stumbled upon the magic of sensory deprivation floating tanks and began to explore their many and surprising benefits, a host of research has been done in this area and additionally, a number of excellent books on floatation tank therapy have been written. Check them out below. Happy New Year! Need a little help sticking with those New Year’s Resolutions? Floating can help!15/1/2018 We’re more than halfway in to January now, and you know what that means: many of us have either given up on our New Year’s Resolutions already, or our commitment is starting to waver. But not to worry! It’s not too late to get a grip on those desires for self-improvement, growth and change in this new year. And we know just the thing to help you re-commit!
It may seem strange, but lying naked in a floatation tank for an hour or two regularly has been shown to be one of the best methods out there for sticking to resolutions, breaking old bad habits and forming positive new ones. Studies of the effects of floatation on breaking habits and addictions have shown incredible results. From quitting smoking to weight loss to breaking all kinds of addictions, habits and dependencies, a regular floating practice has been demonstrated again and again to be beneficial. We’ll run through the hows and whys of habit change below, and outline some of the findings of those intriguing studies! Quitting smoking: Pioneering studies conducted by psychologist and professor Dr. Peter Suedfeld have shown that sensory deprivation is hugely beneficial in the process of quitting smoking, and particularly in what’s known as the maintenance effect. Many methods of quitting smoking yield reasonable results in the short term, but Suedfeld found that two years later, subjects who had undergone sensory deprivation therapy were much less likely to be smoking or were smoking far less than another group who had undergone otherwise identical treatment without sensory deprivation. What does this mean for your resolution to quit smoking in 2018? Whatever other methods you might be trying, from patches to hypnotherapy to cold turkey, your chances of stopping smoking and staying stopped are massively improved by incorporating a regular float into your routine. You don’t even have to do anything special in your float - Suedfeld found that sensory deprivation alone was beneficial. But if you do want to boost your float experience, you can work with mantras, positive visualisations and other tools to make sure your body gets the message that it is a non-smoker from now on! Weight reduction: Many people resolve each January that this will be the year they really lose weight. They start out strong but then the barrage of contradictory messages from advertisements, magazines, television, well-meaning friends, cookbooks and even medical professionals confuse them so much they lose touch with themselves and why they wanted to lose weight in the first place. Well, you guessed it: floating in sensory deprivation tanks can help! How? Well, it has to do with the science of stress and relaxation. When we are stressed, the body responds by releasing cortisol. High levels of cortisol in the body interfere with the metabolic process and cause us to gain abdominal fat. Stress also causes overeating: cortisol can confuse hunger signals and cause cravings for high fat, simple carbohydrate foods that the body can easily convert to energy. These habits, once formed, can be difficult to break. Floatation therapy can help by clearing cortisol and other stress hormones from the body, and at the same time releasing endorphins, which are natural feel-good chemicals. Scientists think it is this release of endorphins that explains the high rates of effectiveness of floatation therapy in weight loss programs and the treatment of other addictive behaviours. These natural opiates simply help us to create pleasurable feelings, thereby decreasing the need to eat for comfort. Furthermore, in a floatation tank, you are able to increase your body awareness, your emotional awareness and take some time and space for self-analysis. You may use the opportunity to discover what your trigger mechanisms are, as well as gaining clarity on your motivations and expectations around weight loss and your relationship to yourself and food. Discard all those confusing cultural messages and get back to basics: you and your body. Alcohol reduction: Been overindulging this silly season? If alcohol dependency is becoming a problem for you, you guessed it, floatation therapy can help! For reasons very similar to those laid out above, the floatation tank environment is a powerful stimulus for change. Research conducted by Dr. Roderick Borrie has shown fantastic results for the reduction of alcohol consumption using sensory deprivation therapy! General lifestyle change: Maybe your resolution is something more general, like just being more present, having more fun, worrying less. Taking regular time to connect with yourself throughout all the stresses of the new year will help you to keep in touch with yourself, make decisions that serve you, and stay connected with your mental and physical health. So don’t guilt yourself about letting your resolutions slip a bit! Get in the tank and spend some time loving yourself, listening to yourself and letting yourself be. And then get on with being the best you yet in 2018! Book now! While it’s not common, it is completely normal for some floaters to experience stinging or discomfort in their most sensitive areas when floating. There are a few possible causes for this, and a handful of easy solutions that can get you floating experience comfortably! Why might some of us experience vaginal stinging or sensitivity in the floatation tank environment? All bodies are different, and no two vaginas are alike, so there are a few possibilities as to why you might have experienced discomfort, stinging, buring and even irritation. Sometimes it simply has to do with especially sensitive skin down there, or the way your vagina tilts in a relaxed, lying down position. Another possible cause of stinging while floating is the presence of cuts or scratches in the area, things like irritation from shaving or waxing and micro-tears caused by sexual activity. However, in the absence of any outward cause, vaginal discomfort in the sensory deprivation tank environment is usually just a matter of body chemistry. The vagina is a naturally acidic environment, which is the body’s clever way of keeping bacterial infections at bay. In contrast, the Epsom salt rich solution in the floatation tank is pH balanced, which means it is more alkaline than the vagina. The average, natural pH of the vagina is in the range of 3.8-4.5, whereas the water in the floatation tank is closer to 7.0. This pH shift can be sufficient to cause burning or stinging in some people with sensitive vaginal skin. It seems that menopausal women may be more prone to irritation, perhaps to do with dryness and changes in skin texture with changing hormones. The good news is, all of these issues can be easily managed with proper preparation, so you can enjoy a relaxing float without any distractions! How can I manage vaginal discomfort and still have an awesome floatation session? If you have experienced vaginal discomfort when floating in the past, or when swimming, taking a bath, etc., we recommend the following approach to facilitate the most relaxing float possible:
If you are prone to bacterial infections such as bacterial vaginosis, you may also wish to rebalance the pH of your vagina after floating. This can be accomplished by diluting a small quantity of hydrogen peroxide, which has the same natural pH as the vagina, in some water and washing the area carefully. You can also use an oral syringe or douche to wash from the inside out. Consult your doctor before undertaking this. Following the steps outlined above will ensure that you have the most comfortable float possible! So you can get the benefit of all those beautiful Epsom salts, plus the floatation tank’s unique zero-gravity, sensory-deprivation atmosphere. And all without that vaginal discomfort distracting you! Happy floating and see you on the other side! Exactly what happened when Jennifer Lawrence tried the trendy float therapy? Read the full story.

Participant places for the recent research study: REST floatation therapy for fibromyalgia treatment, undertaken in Melbourne have been filled. Participants in the previous Swedish study reported “a decrease in pain, muscle tension, stress and anxiety, and improved mood, well-being and even better quality of sleep,” and this follow-up research was designed to test these claims in Australia. Fibromyalgia does not seem to respond well to other treatments so, says Lena Yammine, Inner Outer Health director, “I was excited for our clinic to participate in this historic and potentially life-changing research program.” Inner Outer Health (IOH) is a Melbourne-based floatation therapy private centre, which started enrolling Australian fibromyalgia sufferers early in 2016. Fibromyalgia is a complicated and often misunderstood disorder that causes pain and tenderness throughout the body and floatation therapy promises many positive health outcomes to sufferers. IOH participated in the research to test the claims of previous international research on a Melbourne population. In 2010, Dr. Roderick Borrie helped organise floatation centres in five countries and showed an alternative treatment option to help fibromyalgia sufferers manage and reduce pain without drugs. The current study was designed to explore longer-term possibilities for fibromyalgia patients in Melbourne, Australia. “Unfortunately, the numbers were filled,” says Lena, “and now we’re awaiting the results of the study, which may be presented at the 2016 Float Conference in August.” IOH wants to thank all participants for taking part in this important research. Some opt for a ‘mummy makeover’ package or other cosmetics, which may sound like a great gift idea but, the sad reality it could be taken the wrong way. Suggesting, “let’s fix your tired-looking body” might not be a thoughtful way to kick start Mother’s Day! While some mums may crave to lift up or tighten their figure, it may be something they want to keep to themselves. Of course, not every woman wants to look like Elle Macpherson or Kim Kardashian posing for the perfect selfie. Every mum has the right to treat her body however she likes without being judged, especially on Mother’s Day. Mums always run ragged doing all the superhero stuff that makes them, well, awesome. The least you could do is help your mum to jump off the treadmill of constant worrying and multi-tasking and take a well-deserved break. Have you considered giving your mum |
